It was mid-July as I drove the Bluebird south on Highway 25 in New Mexico. Sunrise lit the tops of buildings in Truth Or Consequences, a small town several miles downroad. The Count Magic crew was asleep, except for Joey, who had awakened from a short nap on the bench-seat behind me. I glanced in the rear-view mirror as she slowly drew her legs up and encircled her arms around her knees. She drowsily looked out the window at the brown terrain.

Thus begins Midnight Highway, the boisterous account of a travelling vampire act wending its way through the remote reaches of the American Southwest. Written with a chronicler's love of the area, with a sharp eye for its characters and a keen ear for its speech, the narrative conveys the high energy and bright spirits of a performance group in the midst of mountains, cacti and ten-gallon hats. Count Magic's never-ending roguery and his skills at creating a vodka-fueled show, along with his crew's enthusiasm for presenting vampire horrors, sex and bloodletting to the denizens of desert towns, merge affably to offer the reader a good-feeling ride.
